Irish company secures €2m contract

Holgate Glasgow projectIrish company Holgate Infrastructure & Motorway Services, provider of vehicle restraint systems, environmental noise barrier solutions and bridge parapet systems, part of the Siteserv plc Group, has won a €2m contract to build the largest noise barrier in the UK, as part of the M74 motorway extension in Glasgow.

Interlink M74 Joint Venture, comprising of Balfour Beatty Civil Engineering along with equal joint venture partners Morgan EST, Morrison Construction and Sir Robert McAlpine, is responsible for the 8km extension project, worth a total of £445 million.

This extension will significantly reduce congestion on the busiest stretch of the M8 through Glasgow and is seen as a vital piece of infrastructure to facilitate the Commonwealth games in 2014.

Holgate has been engaged to provide 12,000 sq/m of high specification barrier solution to mitigate noise pollution along this built up route. The contract represents the largest single noise barrier project in the UK at present and sets a new standard in noise barrier specification in the UK which is consistent with best practice throughout Europe.

The product selected for the project is the Holgate High performance Aluminium absorbent system, CE marked and tested to EN1793 and EN1794. The contract also includes the side fixing of reinforced transparent acrylic barriers from Plexiglas to the outside of seven bridge structures.

The aluminium design is aesthetically unique as it requires the use of 12 different panel colours which are used to achieve a different colour scheme on the carriageway for motorists while the residents get a colour scheme intended to blend into the locality. All paint finishes have an inbuilt anti-graffiti coating which is highly compressed and cannot be penetrated by graffiti sprays, therefore being easily dissolved and removed.

Also in Scotland, Holgate has recently been awarded the crash barrier contract for the A9 Crubenmore. Holgate is also engaged in numerous maintenance and small scale projects throughout the UK.

Holgate was established in 1970 and operated throughout the UK until it became part of the Stenoak group in the 90’s. In 1993 the Irish Division was bought out from Stenoak PLC and concentrated its offering in the emerging Irish market, becoming the dominant player with over 80% of the market. Holgate is today part of the Siteserv plc Group of Companies and provides a turnkey service for supply, installation and repair services throughout the UK, Ireland, Europe and the Middle East.

Holgate commenced UK operations in 2010 with the installation of vetex crash barrier and high performance aluminium noise barrier on the M50 Linton upgrade for Alu Griffiths and Amey.
